Holcim Cement Works Westport stands as one of the most extensive demolition and clearance endeavors ever undertaken in New Zealand. This monumental project demands a diverse array of heavy machinery, ranging from 20-tonne to 220-tonne capacities.
Initially projected to span 18 months by Holcim, Nikau is surpassing expectations, poised to complete the task in just 15 months, incorporating additional civil works as requested by Holcim. The project encompasses multiple sites across Cape Foulwind and Westport, covering a vast area exceeding approximately 200 hectares.
Among its challenges, the project involves the removal of 33,000m2 of asbestos exterior cladding, coupled with historic clinker cement adherence, featuring an average layer cover of 100mm density. Notably, the demolition includes heavy mills, 3 concrete chimneys towering at 50m in height, and 9 concrete silos reaching up to 40m, with 3 situated on a seaside wharf area bordering the township.
Throughout the endeavor, stringent environmental controls are upheld, with transparent communication between Holcim and Nikau management. Holcim acknowledges the project’s exemplary health and safety standards, setting records both nationally and internationally.
An integral aspect of the project is the opportunity to train local employees in demolition and machinery operations, fostering future employment prospects within the community. The primary plant, aptly situated at “Cape Foulwind,” features cement holding tanks, silos, bag houses, laboratories, and other structures, many of which are in poor structural condition and clad in deteriorated asbestos.
Navigating contaminated soils, adverse weather conditions, and the remote location posed unique challenges for the Nikau team throughout the project’s 15-month duration.
As a Manager who has brought Wayne in, I have found that all the workers have given me good feedback, learnt a great deal and want more. The training also covers the safety aspect, which is particularly important for the younger ones who tend to pick up bad practices. Being able to combine the training and testing has been handy this time as well.

The training I undertook was Tig and Gas welding using what machines we had available to us at the time. I found that Wayne went through all relevant instructions and he thoroughly covered all safety points and went over all the do's and don'ts on Tig and Gas welding, Good course.
